God Heals the Brokenhearted

There are wounds that are not visible, yet they shape how we wake, how we hope, and how we carry ourselves through the day. Scripture does not shy away from such pain. Again and again, God reveals Himself as the One who comes close to the brokenhearted—not to dismiss their grief, but to heal it from within. In our brokenness, we often feel disqualified or distant from God, yet it is in these very depths that He is present.

Reflection

Scripture speaks with clarity into human pain: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). God does not remain distant from grief. He draws near, attentive to wounds that words often fail to express.

There is a particular pain that accompanies loss—a grief that lingers beyond the moment itself. After our miscarriages, my heart felt broken in ways I struggled to describe. I would wake each morning before fully coming round, wondering if it had all been a dream. How I hoped it had. But then reality would settle again, and the hurt was as real as ever. The loss replayed itself daily, quietly but relentlessly.

One Sunday during a church service, the pastor sensed that there were people present who were brokenhearted, and that the Holy Spirit desired to bring healing. Space was given for the Spirit to move. My wife and I found ourselves in tears—not prompted, not planned, but deeply moved in God’s presence.

I cannot point to a dramatic moment or outward sign. But I believe that day the Holy Spirit healed my heart from within. From that point on, those waking moments of confusion and renewed grief ceased. The ache of loss did not vanish from memory, but the wound itself was healed. What had been raw and relentless was gently restored.

This is how God often works—not erasing the past, but redeeming its hold on us. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). The Spirit of God tends to places no human hand can reach, bringing restoration that is quiet, profound, and deeply personal.

Healing does not mean forgetting. It means being made whole again—able to breathe, to hope, and to live without being defined by what once overwhelmed us. God’s promise is not the absence of sorrow, but His faithful presence within it.

If your heart feels broken today—whether through loss, disappointment, or grief unseen—know this: God sees. He is near. And His Spirit still heals.

Prayer

Healing God,

You are close to the brokenhearted, and gentle with those who are crushed in spirit. Thank You that You do not turn away from our pain, but meet us within it.

Where hearts are wounded, bring Your healing. Where grief has lingered, bring Your peace. Where sorrow has taken root, restore hope.

Holy Spirit, tend to the places within us that only You can reach. Bind up what is broken, and make us whole again. Teach us to trust You with our pain, and to rest in Your faithful love.

Amen.
